I have been enamored by the idea of having a blog for a while. After years of putting it off and too much time spent trying to decide on the perfect design and hosting platform, I finally decided on this minimal design with a focus on the writing itself.
I've noticed that with the increasingly strong pull of algorithmic feeds, I've stopped creating as much as I would like to. This blog is an attempt to intentionally push back against the flood of algorithmically optimized content to develop the habit of creating in a deliberate, pared-down format.
The title of the blog (Meletẽ) is an ancient greek word that means contemplation or practice. It also refers to the name of one of the original three muses who was the muse of exercise and thought. When I stumbled across the word, it felt perfect for how I envision this blog: a place for me to cultivate the practice of thinking deeply. The muse of practice was unique because unlike the other muses that directly provided divine inspiration for creative output, she provided the inspiration for the precondition of creative output: practice and contemplation. This blog, like the muse herself, was created as an impetus to inspire the practice of thinking and reflecting.
This site was written by me using exclusively plain HTML and CSS. I am hosting it on NearlyFreeSpeech.net. All of the code was written by me, but I used AI (Claude) to troubleshoot some margin and padding issues. Since I am not experienced with web development, I may use AI in the future in a similar manner to troubleshoot design issues, but all of my content will be exclusively written by me.
